GameStop poaches third Amazon executive as online drive accelerates

GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) has poached a third Amazon executive as 13% shareholder and transformation head Ryan Cohen shifts the video game retailer’s focus online.

Amazon Fresh Stores head Elliott Wilke has been appointed as GameStop’s new chief growth officer, the company reported today, sending shares in the Reddit retail trading favourite up 1% to US$181.90.

Wilke, who had been at the online giant for seven years, will join Jenna Owens who was formerly Amazon’s multi-channel fulfilment head but is now Game Stop’s chief operating officer and Matt Francis, CTO, who was previously head of Amazon’s web engineering team.

Cohen has been cutting a swathe through the previous management of GameStop since his appointment as chair of the strategic planning and capital allocation committee.

This week, the founder appointed former colleagues Andrea Wolfe and Tom Peterson to run Game Stop’s brand development and merchandising, respectively.

Chief customer officer Frank Hamlin and chief financial officer Jim Bell both left recently as part of the online shake-up that is expected to see eight directors depart at GameStop’s annual meeting this year.
